The Most Controversial Superman Story Ever

Superman faces off with Luthor several times this month, but the story that will live in infamy is the Man of Steel's encounter with Sleez.

Superman # 10

Superman's powers are going crazy and at the worst possible time he's attacked by a new robot villain who calls himself Klaash.  The citizens of Metropolis can't seem to see Klaash and don't understand why he's tearing the city apart with his out of control heat vision.  It turns out the uncontrollable powers and the robot are both related.  Superman figures out that Lex Luthor has been using a satellite to bombard certain areas of the country with solar wavelengths, and then by fine tuning the radiation Luthor could control which powers to disrupt.  Unable to get any crimes to stick to him, Luthor walks away graciously offering to pay the property damage.  After all, Mr. Luthor cannot help but feel at least "partially" responsible since the renegade robot was his design.  Maggie Sawyer vows to catch Luthor someday, and in private Luthor orders his security to conduct a full probe on the meddling police captain.  For reasons unknown, Luthor (or anybody else, for that matter) doesn't attempt this scheme again, even though it was really quite effective.

Adventures of Superman #433

"A Tragedy in Five Acts."  Five different chapters follow Jimmy Olsen, Lois Lane, Perry White, Jose Delgado, and Lex Luthor through the ongoing saga of the corruption of Perry's juvenile delinquent son Jerry.  Luthor's Project: Synapse is revealed to be a plan to turn gang members into manufactured warriors temporarily as strong as Superman for a few minutes until they die.

Action Comics #593

Scott Free, aka Mr. Miracle, arrives home and instead of his wife he finds Darkseid, sitting in his chair drinking wine.  Demanding to know where Barda is, Darkseid shows him a video tape that his agents somehow acquired from Suicide Slum.  The reader doesn't get to see the screen, but we're left to assume it's pornographic in nature.  Mr. Miracle searches Suicide Slum to find Sleez is in the process of shooting another video, now with both Barda and the Man of Steel.  He stops the production and frees the stars from Sleez's mind control.  Superman pursues Sleez down the sewer but the villain presumably kills himself in an explosion.  Barda and Superman both claim to not remember what happened under hypnosis, and it's probably best if we all forget it.
