After Byrne

Roger Stern takes over writing Superman after the finale of John Byrne's Supergirl Saga, while Jerry Ordway continues on Adventures of Superman.  When he started out, John Byrne indicated that he wanted to do a run of over 100 issues on a book and speculated if Superman might be it.  Alas, it was not meant to be, although John Byrne would later return to Action Comics in 2005 for 7 issues.  Nevertheless, some fans will still always refer to Post-Crisis Superman as the Byrne era for as long as Man of Steel defined the character.

Superman #23

Clark Kent comes home to find the Batman in his apartment with a mysterious ancient book about the Silver Banshee that still seems to be being written as they read it.  Meanwhile, Lois and Jimmy arrive on a strange island in between Ireland and Scottland where they find the Silver Banshee's brother who we met back in Superman #17.  Superman flies across the ocean to try to find them, but is attacked by an even more powerful Silver Banshee.  We finally get the Silver Banshee's origin story of how the villain was cursed in a religious ritual and has to bring the book back to her clan before she can get her revenge.  The crone who gave her the supernatural power is displeased that she has used her powers to selfishly kill without hesitation and destroys the book.  Before she disappears, the crone tells Superman and his friends that the McDougal clan pact has been sealed, although this won't be the last we see of Silver Banshee.  Mike Mignola once again steps up as guest artist and his eerie style is fitting for this issue.

Adventures of Superman #446

Superman is starting to have nightmares about killing General Zod and awakens having demolished his apartment.  Jose Delgado shows up to his appointment where doctors are able to help him walk again with the assistance of technology, while unbeknownst Lex Luthor watches on the security camera.  At GBS, Morgan Edge previews a news story about a voodoo killer while he contemplates how to lure Cat Grant away from her exclusive contract with the Daily Planet.  Three criminals plan an elaborate attack to rob a beer truck, which turns out to be smuggling Lex Luthor's battle suits.  Superman struggles to stop the crooks from causing too much damage but also needs to get them out of the battle suits before it causes irreparable brain damage (as seen back in Man of Steel).  MSCU detective Dan Turpin watches and wonders why Superman appears to be holding back.  That night, Gangbuster returns and breaks into a warehouse to investigate the smuggling of Lexcorp weapons.

The World of Metropolis #4

The last issue of the year-long "world of" series that began with World of Krypton, and also the last issue by John Byrne.  Jimmy Olsen flashes back to when he was 14 and needed to find a way to contact Superman when a troubled neighbor girl attempts suicide.  His invention would become his famous signal watch.
