Metallo Returns

Superman crosses over with the Doom Patrol this month and pre-Crisis Supergirl fans are teased with hints about the new Girl of Steel.

Doom Patrol #10

Metallo attacks the newly re-formed Doom Patrol in Kansas City to steal some of Robotman's inventory of spare parts.  Metallo (from back in Superman #1) learns he can control Robotman's body and uses him to decimate the new members of the Doom Patrol in training.  Superman, who happens to be visiting Lana Lang in Smallville at the time, rushes to the scene but arrives too late to stop him.  Former Supergirl villain, Reactron, makes a cameo as he transitions into his post-Crisis role as a Power Girl/Doom Patrol villain.

This is a straight-forward comic book illustrated by future Savage Dragon creator Erik Larson.  Less than a year from now, this Doom Patrol series would get a dramatic make-over in one of Grant Morrison's earliest DC works.

Superman #20

The Kents visit Lana Lang and find her with a mysterious girl in a costume similar to Superman's.  This Supergirl recognizes Ma and Pa Kent, but remembers they're supposed to be dead (like their pre-Crisis versions).  The story checks in with the supporting cast back in Metropolis (Perry White notices that no matter what time he's in the office, Alice is always there and she jokes about having a cot there), but then picks up where Superman finds the Doom Patrol in Kansas.  Superman deduces that Lex Luthor stole Metallo's kryptonite heart and Metallo has been the one breaking into Lexcorp installations around the world looking for it.  Without kryptonite, Metallo just isn't a Superman-level threat.  Knowing Robotman can survive without his body, Superman decapitates him so Metallo can no longer use the body and the Doom Patrol destroys Metallo.  Except for the head, which they can't find.  Superman flies away, desperate for some R&R in Smallville, but a certain Supergirl follows behind him on the last page.

Adventures of Superman #443

Don't expect the Supergirl saga to continue here, however.  This issue is an unrelated self-contained story in which Clark Kent and Jimmy Olsen go to Qurac looking for a missing journalist who was taken hostage.  The beginning is very relevant to current events, but then it gets weird when they encounter yet another forgotten alien civilization that was here before the Circle.  This story will actually be continued over a year later in Superman #39.

The World of Metropolis #1

Perry White flashes back to a time when he and Lex Luthor used to be friends.  Lex (who when he had hair bears a striking resemblance to Donald Trump, which should tell you just how morally bankrupt he is) plans to shut down the Daily Planet and Perry frantically tries to save it.  Lex also nearly destroys Perry's marriage with an affair with his wife, Alice.  Perry also meets an enthusiastic schoolgirl named Lois on a field trip to the newspaper.
