Superman in Space!
Pre-Crisis Superman would fly into outer space so often it became routine and uneventful. For post-Crisis Superman, space travel was supposed to be an event. Although the Man of Steel had already ventured into space a few times previously, sometimes with seemingly no rules, this story line (retroactively called "Exile") would instill the rules that writes would follow for the next decade (such as Superman can't breathe in space), until Jeph Loeb would break those rules in the year 2000.
Back on Earth, Ma and Pa Kent mail Clark's letters exposing Intergang to the daily planet. The story hits too close to Morgan Edge and he decides he must call a hit on Clark Kent. Braniac wakes up from his sedative slumber longer enough to let Luthor know that he can no longer sense Superman's mind. While spying on Clark's apartment, Amanda McCoy's partner decides to disobey her and break in, where he's mistaken for the reporter by Intergang and assassinated.
Teleporting randomly into unknown territory, Superman finds himself attacked by giant space amoeba. By the end of the issue, he figures out that he's actually inside some giant organism. Superman is starting to think it wasn't so wise to blindly teleport around the universe with a limited oxygen supply.
Meanwhile, the police try to identify the mysterious body in Clark Kent's apartment. Amanda McCoy knows it's not really Clark Kent, but decides it's best for everybody involved if Intergang thinks it was him. Lex Luthor learns that it was Clark Kent who saved his life a few issues ago, and also learns that Clark is apparently now dead. A reporter calls the Kent home (where Matrix answers the phone), and Jonathan Kent lies and says Clark is there. With Superman gone, Lex Luthor decides to send Jose Delgado, now under his physical control, to assassinate professor Emil Hamilton. The professor resists and using his technology is able to free Jose from Luthor's suit, and almost exposes Luthor on television. Lex vows to get even, but Hamilton tells Luthor: "you could me tomorrow and I'd die happy, because I hurt you."
Superman #28
While wandering aimlessly, Superman reflects on the events after the Supergirl Saga that led him to this self-imposed exile. Using a teleportation device borrowed from the Omega Men, he lands on a dead world, almost falls into the gravitational pull of a sun, and almost becomes the hero of an alien civilization.Back on Earth, Ma and Pa Kent mail Clark's letters exposing Intergang to the daily planet.
