Dark Knight over Metropolis
Batman guest stars in a 3-part story this month that brings the World's Finest team closer to being friends. In post-Crisis continuity, Batman and Superman's alliance has been uneasy. They were never in the Justice League together and it would still take several
years for them to reach the level of friendship they used to have. At this point in Batman's career, he's lost a second Robin, Jason Todd, and recently gained a third one, Tim Drake (although there's no mention of Robin in the story).
Every issue has a similar trade dress on the cover, as well as splash pages resembling confidential files and newspaper clippings throughout the book to transition from one scene to another.
Former Gotham City detective Slam Bradley investigates the brutal murder of an unknown woman in Suicide Slum with strange traces of radiation, while in Gotham City another detective in a cape and cowl investigates the strange death of a homeless man found with a radioactive ring. In Metropolis, Lex Luthor discovers that his kryptonite ring has been stolen by somebody with inside knowledge of Lexcorp.
At the Batcave, the Dark Knight deduces that the vagrant had recently come from Metropolis and decides to continue the investigation there as Bruce Wayne by attending a journalism awards show sponsored by Lex Luthor. Superman goes back to the ruined Fortress of Solitude and starts to repair it, beginning with the statue of his parents, Jor El and Lara. He flies back to metropolis just in time to take Lois Lane out, where all these story lines will collide next issue.
Gangbuster is taken out by Shockwave and Chiller, a shape-shifter who tricks him by impersonating Cat Grant. Later when Jose shows up to take Cat to Luthor's awards ceremony, he reveals that he's really Chiller in disguise again. Bruce Wayne meets Lois, Clark, and Luthor at Luthor's country estate for the awards show. Intergang attacks to try to kill Lois and Clark, but Superman and Batman are coincidentally there to stop them.
Later, Superman finds Batman at Amanda McCoy's apartment. The thieves who killed her found her keys and ransacked her apartment, but didn't steal its most valuable object: her diary. Batman explains the story that began nearly 4 years ago when Amanda McCoy discovered Superman was Clark Kent (Superman #2). It was she who mysteriously returned Ma Kent's missing scrapbook to Clark, and it was her partner who was found dead in Clark's apartment while Superman was in space. Finally, Batman reveals that he possesses the missing kryptonite ring, and he leaves it with Superman. Back in Gotham, however, Superman intrudes into the Batcave and to give him back the ring in case he ever needs somebody he can trust to stop him. Superman acknowledges that he and Batman aren't exactly friends yet, but this gesture is a step forward in their post-Crisis relationship.
