Soul Search: Chapter One
Superman completes the fourth year of the post-Crisis reboot. A pre-Crisis villain is re-introduced, some post-Crisis villains re-appear, and a new villain appears for the first time.
Terra Man gets a modernized, Westworld-esque make-over but it's still a forgettable story. The real things to pay attention to are that Jimmy Olsen and Jerry White are spending a lot of time at the Blazes night club, and Clark takes Lois to Smallville for a fireworks show at the end, where they romantically embrace.
Meanwhile in Metropolis, Jimmy Olsen arrives at Blazes while Jerry White seems to be making a drug deal with Intergang that goes awry. Jerry and Jimmy are both shot and left bleeding in the alley as the night club's mysterious owner, Angelica Blazes, watches.
Clark Kent arrives back at his Metropolitan apartment only to discover that his best friend has been shot. He flies to the hospital as Superman, questioning if he has been a good enough friend to Jimmy lately. At the hospital he meets the Black Racer, who says Superman will have to follow him off Earth if he wants to save Jimmy's life. Opening a boom tube, the Racer takes the Man of Steel to a hellish nether world where he meets a demonic villainness named Blaze. Apparently Superman still has to wonder if both female Blazes are the same.
Meanwhile at Lexcorp, Luthor gets some really bad news from his doctor which we'll find out at a later time.
Superman #46
There haven't been many re-introductions of pre-Crisis villains lately (aside from the not-really Kryptonite Man a few issues ago). Superman still has untapped villains from his rogues gallery, but Terra Man seems like an odd choice for a post-Crisis makeover. He's a western-themed villain who was never really that popular in the pre-Crisis era to begin with. Here he's given no introduction or origin, he simply shows up to attack a biosphere presentation that Lois and Clark are covering and that Infinity Inc. members Jade and Obsidian happen to working at now. Times have been tough for Infinity Inc. since Crisis altered the history of the Justice Society, the team no longer has their own ongoing series and there seems to be no particular reason for this brother and sister to appear here. Jade and Obsidian would spend the rest of the 90's relegated to similar guest appearances; in the 2000's Obsidian would graduate to the new JSA and Jade would join the JLA.Terra Man gets a modernized, Westworld-esque make-over but it's still a forgettable story. Adventures of Superman #469
The fireworks are interrupted when an alien ship lands in Smallville. It turns out a pair of energy-based hunters are looking for Dreadnaught and Psi-Phon, who in turn are looking for Clark Kent (who they think defeated them back in Adventures of Superman #442). Aware of how their powers work now, Superman is no longer fooled into thinking they can make him powerless. The fight is seemingly interrupted by Dreadnaught's wife, who is said to have sent the hunters to look for her run-away husband. Fortunately, this ridiculous explanation later turns out to be a military cover-up.Meanwhile in Metropolis, Jimmy Olsen arrives at Blazes while Jerry White seems to be making a drug deal with Intergang that goes awry.
