Time and Time Again
After last issue's big reveal, Lois needs some time and Superman gets lost in time.
In other news, Lexcorp learns that Luthor did name an heir in his will, an illegitimate son he had with his doctor, Gretchen Kelley. The doctor and her mysterious son both seem to have disappeared.
Jose Delgado drops by to give Cat Grant some flowers for Valentine's Day but sees that she's already received flowers from lots of other men. They comment about how Jose had been interested in Lois and Cat was interested in Clark, but now Lois and Clark are together and so are they.
A time-traveling bounty hunter known as the Linear Man comes to Metropolis to find Booster Gold, who originally came from the 25th century with stolen technology that enables him to be a superhero in our more primitive present. The Linear Man is a walking 90's cliche who looks like he could've been designed by Rob Liefeld.
Clark is trying to talk to Lois but from her balcony they see Booster Gold shot down in the sky by the Linear Man and she knows Superman has to go rescue him. In trying to stop the Linear Man, Superman accidentally touches his time travel controls on his wrist, and rips a hole in the fabric of time creating a giant vortex in the sky. Superman and the Linear Man both disappear in a flash, leaving Lois to wonder what happened to her fiance. Superman wakes up in the 30th century to find the teenage founders of the Legion of Superheroes: Saturn Girl, Cosmic Boy, and Lightning Lad.
Superman wants to know if the Legion knows whatever happened to the Man of Steel, but unfortunately their records of his period are more legend than history. Their meeting is short-lived as a sudden explosion inexplicably sends Superman back in time, this time to 1943. Recovering from the explosion, Superman's costume has changed color to black and his vision has turned blurry. From this time period he realizes there's even less of a chance of getting back to his own time, and wonders if he'll have to live out his life this way and if he'll ever see Lois again. While he recovers, he gets a job as a strong man in a circus, but leaves it when they get to Metropolis. In the city, he foils an assassination attempt on President FDR, and then it occurs to him he should seek out the heroes of this period, the Justice Society of America. Before he can reveal himself to them, however, the Spectre stops him and tells him it's not time yet for him to meet the JSA, but sends him to another place where he's needed instead. Superman then finds himself in Nazi-occupied Poland.
Superman #53
After Clark reveals his secret identity to Lois, she needs some time alone to think about it. In the meantime, Superman does a mission for the U.S. government: escorting former Quraci President Marlo into U.S. custody. At first Superman is hesitant to accept the army's request, reflecting on his first confrontation with their military (Adventures of Superman #427). He agrees and protects the aircraft carrying Marlo from several outside attacks, but it turns out the biggest threat was an assassination attempt by a new terrorist organization called the Sons of Liberty, led by a U.S. army officer. Superman is upset to learn the army had been aware of the plot for six months and not only used the Man of Steel as bait also allowed terrorist attacks to continue like normal while they chased a paper trail. As Superman leaves, the general thinks to himself how politically naive Superman is and prays he never turns against them.In other news, Lexcorp learns that Luthor did name an heir in his will, an illegitimate son he had with his doctor, Gretchen Kelley.
