Blackout Conclusion

The wedding of Superman comes sooner than expected, but Lois Lane is not the bride!

Superman: The Man of Steel #6

Blackout part 3

Superman and Mr. Z have still lost their memories and are trying to survive on a mysterious island with dinosaurs.  They're discovered by a lost tribe who speaks an unknown language.  Superman and Mr. Z think they'll be greeted as heroes, but ironically the natives see the strangers as ignorant barbarians.  Superman thought he was rescuing the chief's daughter from her pet triceratops and then thinks he needs to save her from her father.  This doesn't make a good first impression, but when the girl Lola realizes that he thought he was saving her, she asks her father if she can have the Man of Steel.  She takes him to her bed in a cave, but for reasons he can't explain it feels wrong to Superman and he asks her to leave the cave with him before it goes any further.  Once outside the cave, however, Superman finds himself standing in the middle of a wedding ceremony.

Meanwhile, the Guardian finds Lois and Professor Hamilton at Bibbo's during the blackout of Metropolis.  The Guardian takes Lois and the Professor in the Whiz Wagon to try to find the Man of Steel's last known location in the Arctic.

Superman #62

Blackout part 4

Following a lead from the  French shipwreck survivors who have just been found, Lois and the Professor find the mysterious island and arrive just in time to stop the wedding ceremony.  Superman's new bride and his old fiance both start to fight, but it's broken up by another dinosaur stampede.  Lois wishes she could get Clark alone to talk, but doesn't dare risk exposing Superman's secret identity to the others.  As a last resort, she tries to kiss Superman to see if that will refresh his memory, which causes even more confusion to Superman's friends who know Lois Lane is engaged to another man.

Back in Metropolis, Lex Luthor the 2nd succeeds in restoring the power.  Perry White isn't convinced that another Luthor will be good for the city, but Lex tries to endear himself to Perry by revealing he knows Jerry White was really his half brother.  Gangbuster and Thorn try to stop the mass riots and looting, and they're assisted by Agent Liberty, revealing his name here for the first time.  The three have an almost philosophical argument about the Constitution, freedom, and crime fighting tactics while they fight.

Adventures of Superman #485

Blackout part 5

Unfortunately, Lois' kiss does nothing to cure Superman's amnesia.  Mr. Z decides to stay behind on the island while the Guardian takes everybody else back to Metropolis.  The Guardian gets Dubbilex to meet at Professor Hamilton's lab to try to use his telepathic powers to restore Superman's memories.  Lois is concerned that Dubbilex will find out too much, but he hears her thoughts and telepathically assures her that Superman's secrets will be safe.  Inside Superman's mind, Dubbilex finds Superman's secrets kept secure in a pre-Crisis version of the Fortress of Solitude.  Superman fights imaginary enemies like Metallo, Sleez, and Braniac.  Dubbilex tells him to unlock the door and go inside, where Superman finds his memories of his parents, Lana, and Lois.  As Superman regains consciousness, he almost starts to reveal his secret identity but Lois interrupts him with another kiss.  Professor Hamilton is really starting to wonder what kind of relationship Lois and Clark have now.

Mayor Berkowitz doesn't like having a Luthor in Metropolis again, but decides it's worth it if it can help him get re-elected.  Jimmy Olsen gets a phone call from his mom, but doesn't have the heart to tell her that living on his own isn't working out so well.  The Professor is arrested for causing the blackout, but he gets bailed out by none other than Lex Luthor II.

The wedding episode in Blackout can't help but remind me the classic silver age cover of Superman's Pal Jimmy Olsen #98 where Superman seemingly forces Jimmy to marry a gorilla (how did that ever get past the Comics Code Authority???).  The unexplained gorilla-like appearance of Lola's father seems to be a callback to that issue, but like Superman's amnesia, this part of the story is probably best forgotten.

Action Comics #672

Superman goes back to action in Metropolis, but finds a new Team Luthor is helping the police fight crime now.  The people of Metropolis are ungrateful to Superman, not knowing why he disappeared during the blackout.  The Lexcorp board is not happy with how much of the company's money the new Luthor is spending to improve Metropolis.  A board member tells Luthor II that he is not his father, and the young Lex almost seems to wink at the reader when he replies that he can't dispute that.  With the power back on, Lex Luthor II ends the Daily Planet strike, although Perry White still doesn't want to do business with him.

Perry assigns Lois and Clark to find out everything they can about the new Luthor, so Lois schedules an interview and Superman flies to Australia to investigate.  During the interview, Lois tells Luthor about some of the horrible things his father had done and he seems sorry to hear it.  Superman investigates the burned-down farmhouse where Luthor II was raised and finds a family portrait buried underneath, which he brings back to Metropolis to give to Luthor.  Back at the Daily Planet, Lois and Clark both report to Perry that they've been unable to find anything to contradict Lexcorp's official story about the new Luthor.  But spying through Perry's wired phone, Lex Luthor II gloats in his own office with Happersen that he's successfully fooled all of them, including Superman!
