Panic in the Sky: Prologue

After some very special Christmas stories, the next big Superman epic begins this month: Panic in the Sky.

Superman: The Man of Steel #8

As Metropolis prepares for the holidays, Jolt and Blockhouse plot to lure Superman into a trap by kidnapping Lois Lane.  They abduct her just as she's trying to drop her hundreds of Christmas cards in the mailbox.  After a brawl in a Christmas tree yard, Superman defeats the pair of villains.  Blockhouse is about to reveal the whole plot to Superman but then his mind is apparently remotely switched off by Cerberus.  Watching on a screen in the shadows, Cerberus contemplates that Superman is known to be vulnerable to magic or through his friends being in danger and he vows his next plan will succeed.  Lois Lane pays to have the unbroken trees in the yard sent to a children's shelter, but then laments that she still has to re-send all her Christmas cards.

Superman #64

Get out the tissues!  Superman flies to the post office for his annual holiday ritual of reading his mail, accompanied by Lois Lane who volunteers to help him with the task and write a story on it.  The idea of Superman reading his fan mail goes back to the Silver Age, but this is the first time we see it in the post-Crisis era and the concept has been updated with modern realism.  Superman is depressed by the volume of letters begging for help with problems that he's powerless to fix.  He does successfully reunite two Holocaust survivors, but he has to explain to a boy why he couldn't save his father from cancer.  Lastly, he helps the Daily Planet throw a party for disadvantaged children.  He calls Bruce Wayne to get some toys donated and talks Professor Hamilton into playing Santa.  Dressed entirely in black, the unseen Superman flies Santa's sleigh to the party and enjoys doing a good deed that nobody knows was really him.  That night, Clark gets back to his apartment and receives a wedding invitation from Pete Ross and Lana Lang.

Adventures of Superman #487

Jimmy Olsen spends Christmas at Bibbo's bar and tries to keep Bibbo's drunk friends out of trouble.  Eventually, they all end up with Superman at the children's shelter with Bibbo playing Santa.  Jimmy's mother shows up at the shelter, revealing that Bibbo told her about Jimmy being homeless, and she invites him back to live with her.

In Washington D.C., a senator receives a mysterious Christmas package that turns out to be a mail bomb, killing him after he opens it.  Pete Ross gets a phone call from the governor, informing him that the governor has appointed him as the dead senator's replacement.  Agent Liberty investigates the scene of the crime and tries to uncover who was behind the senator's assassination.

And finally, Lois and Clark spend a quiet Christmas together exchanging gifts.

Action Comics #674

Panic in the Sky: Prologue

Hearing that Superman is back in his region of deep space, Draaga teams up with Maxima to get revenge on the last Kryptonian.

Back on Earth, Superman hunts down the remaining fugitive Intergangsters.  Hellgrammite watches Superman in action and decides he'll need to be careful in his plans to eliminate Lex Luthor II.  Jimmy gets the film developed of the robot he photographed and is excited that it could be his ticket back to employment.

Draaga finds a confused Superman with the Cellkeeper he met the last time he was here, back when the Cleric gave him the Eradicator.  Superman doesn't seem to remember that, and after Draaga attacks the Man of Steel we learn that it's really Matrix in the shape of Superman again.  Matrix then transforms into Supergirl for the first time since the Supergirl Saga.  To Draaga's surprise, War World returns and teleports both of them into the arena to fight, where Supergirl humiliates Draaga again.  We learn that Maxima's homeworld Almerac has fallen to War World and she takes order from their new ruler now.  War World's mysterious hooded leader convinces Supergirl that Superman is their mutual enemy, and then he removes his cloak to reveal himself as Braniac!
