Cat Grant's Revenge

Spilled Blood wraps up, and Cat Grant confronts the murderer of her son.

Superman: The Man of Steel #29

Spilled Blood: Final Cut

High-Tech continues to pursue Jimmy Olsen and the mysterious Bloodthirst makes his presence known to the Man of Steel.  We never get a real origin for this villain, but it seems he's been causing trouble on earth for millennia.  Bloodthirst traps them all in a temporal distortion field that literally takes Superman days to fight him, but eventually Superman defeats Bloodthirst and Jimmy Olsen defeats High-Tech.  Bloodthirst had believed Lex Luthor was the glue holding Metropolis together, but finds out he was mistaken.  We'll soon see what Lex will do to Metropolis, but the walking 90's cliche villain known as Bloodthirst will never be seen again.

In Smallville, Martha Kent is the latest supporting character to get a new hairstyle.

Superman #85

In flashback we see how Superman tracked down the Toyman to his lair, while in the present we see what Cat Grant plans to do now that the murderer is behind bars.  Cat goes to the police station pretending she's trying to get an interview with her son's killer but instead she sneaks a gun through security.  At first the Toyman taunts her by calling her a bad mother, but when he realizes she's serious about shooting he desperately begs for his life.  She pulls the trigger and the gun turns out to be a toy.  Superman arrives but decides not to tell the authorities after all she's been through.

The death of Cat's son Adam could be seen as part of a regrettable 90's trend where female characters were brutally victimized just to drive the story.  This would notoriously be identified as a trope in an issue of Green Lantern a few months from now, when new GL Kyle Reiner's girlfriend Alexandra Diwitt is murdered and her body stuffed in a refrigerator.  Cat's characterization after this becomes inconsistent, after the 90's she would disappear for several years and subsequent reboots have removed this tragedy from her story altogether.

Adventures of Superman #508

The time-lost Challengers of the Unknown make a detour in Metropolis, literally in-between panels of Challengers of the Unknown #4.  A time traveling tyrant has brought some futuristic weapons disguised as jewelry to Metropolis, but he gets mugged and the rings fall into the hands of a gang.  Fortunately, Superman is there to help the Challengers and send them back to their own time in the past.  We get confirmation at the story's end that the Challenger's Prof Haley is in fact already dead in the present.  Also in the cemetery, Cat Grant has a funeral for Adam.

The Challengers of the Unknown were one of DC's earliest Silver Age teams of adventurers, but they've been mostly forgotten in the post-Crisis era until now.  The Challengers would be revived as a concept a few years from now, albeit with different members.  We'll see that series here when it crosses over with the Superman books for one issue.

Action Comics #695

The foil embossed cover would make you think this issue was important, but really it seems that powers that be were just giving each of the Superman books an enhanced cover to be fair, since Superman and Adventures of Superman each got one a few months ago and Superman: The Man of Steel will get one next month.

Trying to rehabilitate their public image, CADMUS develops a drone for law enforcement called Cauldron.  Unfortunately, Dabney Donavan figures out how to hack this new machine and uses it cause destruction just to get back at them.  Cauldron is destroyed, but he will be seen once again a few years later.

At the Daily Planet, Cat Grant almost catches Lois and Superman kissing on the roof, but Superman is able to change back to Clark before she sees anything.  The father of the personal trainer Lex Luthor II murdered a few months ago asks the reporters to help him solve the mystery of his daughter's disappearance.  A galaxy away, Lobo is making his way towards Earth to see for himself if the Man of Steel is alive again for a rematch.
