Massacre in Metropolis!
This week I catch up with the rest of the Superman books that didn't tie in to Worlds Collide.
The owner of the space bar hires the villain Massacre and a Skimmer to go to Earth and get something rare and valuable, which turns out to just be ice cream. Massacre is more interested in going to Earth to find Superman for a re-match, and creates a massacre to draw out the Man of Steel. Massacre seems to be able to sense Superman's every move before makes it, and easily outmatches him in strength and speed. Unfortunately, he accidentally throws Superman into the exhaust of the Skimmer's ship, causing it to crash down in Metropolis.
The destruction of the city depicted in this issue is more severe than we've previously seen. Lois and Clark are sleeping in tents and boiling water over a campfire. Clark wishes he could take Lois somewhere else, but he still feels responsible for the death of Cat's son Adam the last time they had a getaway in Paris. Jimmy and Lucy Lane are wandering the ruins of the city together, looking for a change of clothes and some film so Jimmy can earn some money.
Some teenage girls are looting the remains of a music store so they can form a band and play a benefit concert for Metropolis. Suddenly Massacre's ship crash lands in the area and they become innocent bystanders in the battle. Jimmy Olsen finds some film and starts snapping pictures while Lois watches. Superman figures out the Massacre isn't a mind-reader but that he can sense nerve signals to anticipate his opponent's next move. Superman uses his heat vision to knock Massacre out from behind with some debris and then starts to mercilessly pummel the villain. The Skimmer fears that Massacre will be defeated and he'll be stranded on primitive Earth, so he tries to take Lois Lane hostage to force Superman to surrender. True to form, Lois saves herself without any help from Superman, although the wrecked overpass they were standing on collapses beneath them. Superman rescues Lois and Jimmy from falling but the Skimmer is severely injured in the fall. Massacre tells Superman he will leave and take the Skimmer to a Xeno-Med, but once in space Massacre lets the Skimmer's body float away. He thinks to himself that he could have saved the Skimmer's life like he promised, but this way he can blame Superman for his death instead.
Through investigative journalism, Ron Troupe finds Bloodsport's weapons cache in a secret vault at the ruined LexCorp tower. He detonates the vault with a hand grenade, so the next time Bloodsport tries to teleport a new weapon he gets nothing but molten pieces of a gun.
In this issue, Lois and Clark are seen working in a temporary field office and the destruction seems a little more civilized.
All month long we've seen house ads for Zero Hour, with the logo getting closer and closer each week. Next week we'll get into Zero Hour, DC's first crossover in several years and their biggest and most consequential story since Crisis on Infinite Earths.

Action Comics #702
The new white supremacist Bloodsport returns to racially purify his turf in Metropolis. It's amazing how a 1994 white supremacist sounds just like a Republican today. In the midst of his mass shooting, Bloodsport gripes about every conservative grievance, from welfare to Bill Clinton. The writers were clearly trying to make him sound more extreme than Rush Limbaugh, but now he seems pretty mild compared to a Trump rally.
