Power Surge

Superman turns into the Incredible Hulk while the battle between LexCorp, CADMUS, and the Underworld consumes Metropolis.

Superman: The Man of Steel #33

Lois Lane wakes up to find out that her exposé on LexCorp has been altered into a ridiculous tabloid story.  As the day goes on, her credit cards are all inexplicably cancelled and her bank accounts or all overdrawn.  Finally, she's pulled over for speeding and a bribed police officer books her for drunk driving.  While she struggles to sort out her life, Lex Luthor II sues the Daily Planet for libel while Perry White can't figure out how that absurd copy actually made it to the printer.

Meanwhile, Superman's power surge has now turned him into a hulk-like monster.  He enlists the aid of CADMUS, who tries to use the Parasite to drain some of his excess power.  Although they try to control him, the Parasite doesn't cooperate and breaks free, wanting to drain all of Superman's powers.  After the experiment fails, CADMUS decides it might be best to get Superman into space, away from Earth and from the sun's rays that are still charging him.

The clone war is getting so bad that parts of the city are being evacuated.  Lex Luthor secretly meets with the Underworld insurgents to offer them LexCorp weapons, vowing if he can't take Metropolis with him, he'll destroy it.

Superman #89

A hulking Superman arrives at the CADMUS space platform where a sesquipedalian scientist tries to help him.  Superman is struggling to concentrate just to turn off his heat vision, sp he speaks in one or two word phrases and sentences, like a certain Marvel character.  For instance, he calls the pedantic scientist "Big Words."  Big Words' dialogue and explanation of the procedure is really tedious, but all you need to know is the experiment fails, the space platform is destroyed, and Superman rescues "Big Words" as they fall to Earth.  Although burning in re-entry, crashing into the ocean, and hitting the floor before resurfacing all probably should have killed an ordinary man.

Unfortunately for Lois, things continue to get worse.  Another story altered into a ridiculous tabloid article somehow makes it to print without any editorial control.  The Planet's publisher suspects Lois Lane is embezzling to pay off her newly discovered personal debt.  With no choice, Perry White calls Lois to his office to fire her.  She knows Luthor is behind it and is determined to get him now.

Adventures of Superman #512

Lois Lane goes back to her apartment to get the evidence to prove her story, but there's an explosion inside as soon as she opens the door.  The fire department puts out the blaze but concludes it was a gas leak with no sign of arson.

Lex Luthor suspects Happersen is the informant who leaked to Lois Lane and points a gun to his head to make him confess.  Happersen displays uncompromising loyalty and passes the test, convincing Luthor that the leak must have come from Packard.

Lois follows her cat Elroy down an alley and finds the hulking Superman.  Deciding that his powers are a threat to everyone around him, he tells her he came to see her one last time before saying goodbye.  She wants him to take her with him, telling him there's nothing left for her there anymore; he tells her not to give up and one of the reason he'll always love her is because she's a fighter.

Just then, the escaped Parasite arrives according to Superman's plan.  Superman propels them both to the moon and lets the Parasite drain a lot of power.  They end up back on Earth, and a normal-sized Superman crashes into the middle of Metropolis.  Now hiding in the sewer, the Parasite is now transformed from a normal humanoid to a hulk-like monster with a giant mouth full of teeth, a look he would keep throughout the 90's.

Action Comics #699

The Battle for Metropolis!  part 1

Superman awakens back to normal but finds no trace of the Parasite.  He visits Professor Hamilton again, who determines that his power and energy are indeed normal again.  Clark Kent finds Lois at her parent's place, and they're able to put their investigations together to deduce Lex Luthor II is really a balding, terminally ill clone who's been sabotaging Lois' career and personal life.  Superman rushes to LexCorp just in time to stop Supergirl from killing Luthor.  In her recent mini-series, Supergirl breaks up with Luthor after discovering he was trying to clone her and also tried to kill her.

The national guard is evacuating more and more of the city and  Jimmy Olsen calls his mother to try to persuade her to leave town for her safety, while he rushes into danger to get the story.  Perry White temporarily moves the Daily Planet newsroom to the publishing building across the harbor, where he starts to question why all the Planet's computer equipment is from LexCorp.  Dr. Kelley evacuates Lex Luthor to his yacht just before LexCorpo tower is attacked by the Underworld.  He tells her not to worry about Packard, who he's sent on a little mission.  She scolds him for his dishonesty costing him his relationship with Supergirl but he doesn't care.  Lex Luthor seems ready to take the whole city down with him.

This month's books have a touching tribute page dedicated to Jack Kirby who had just passed away, although his only DC work it mentions is the New Gods.
