Back at the Daily Planet

With Conduit now behind them, Clark and his friends carry on with their lives and story lines from before the Death of Clark Kent.  Jimmy Olsen is found only to leave again, we get a glimpse into Perry White's life before Superman, and we catch up with Cat Grant.

Action Comics #712

Superman locates the secret hideout where Conduit has imprisoned Jimmy Olsen and saves him from a death trap exactly as depicted on the cover.  Lucy Lane goes to the Daily Planet looking for news about Jimmy and meets Ron Troupe, who tries to comfort her just as Jimmy walks in the room.  Though Lucy jumps into Jimmy's arms and kisses him, this is actually the first hint of a relationship she will have with Ron.

At Stryker's Island prison, the serial killer Ramsey Murdoch discovers that he has the ability to make a knife appear just by thinking about it.  Before he can use it, however, he's called by a guard to do an interview with Lois Lane, who's been covering his story since before the Death of Clark Kent.

Butch Guice still gets art credit on the cover, although the previous issue was really his last.

Superman: The Man of Steel #47

Perry White smashes the Klan!

Superman secretly watches Lois as she goes to Stryker's Island for her interview with the serial killer now calling himself Savior.  After the interview, Lois learns the warden is worried because the original black Bloodsport is being transferred there, which is expected to cause trouble with the white supremacist Bloodsport.

At the Daily Planet, Perry White and his publisher Franklin Stern tell Kieth and his friends a story about when they were younger journalists in the South and came face to face with the Aryan Brotherhood.  Though Superman doesn't appear in this flashback, the story continues a long tradition of Superman and his cast fighting imitation klans that goes back to the 1946 Adventures of Superman radio story, “Clan of the Fiery Cross.”

Superman #103

Lois Lane's column on Savior is a huge success, inspiring Jimmy Olsen to try to write the story of the century.  He devises a plan to lure Arclight, the former mobster who was killing journalists in Washington, D.C. a few issues ago.  Despite enlisting the help of the Newsboy Legion and their Whiz Wagon, Superman intervenes to stop the villain and Ron Troupe beats Jimmy to the story.  Upset that Perry White won't give him the byline for the story he orchestrated, Jimmy quits and storms off, promising never to come back (Spoiler: he'll be back).

Adventures of Superman #526

Trying to manage the tension between the two Bloodsports and their rival race gangs, the prison arranges a boxing match between the two villains with Superman himself as the referee.  In the middle of the match, the white Bloodsport (Alex Trent) reveals he can still access his weapons and chaos ensues.  In the middle of a full-scale prison riot, Savior escapes and the black Bloodsport (Bobby DuBois) is killed by the guards while attempting to escape.  Trent's gang still isn't happy with him though, and they kill him in his cell that night.

Lois Lane catches up with Cat Grant at a bar for the first time since her sexual harassment charges against Vinnie Edge over a year ago.  We've seen Cat as a news anchor occasionally, but we haven't really seen her interact with the regular cast as much anymore.  Still on the wagon, Cat envies Lois and wishes she could get another big story like her Intergang exposé.  However, Vinnie makes sure she's not taken seriously at the network after the lawsuit.  They two journalists see the breaking news about the prison riot on TV and both excuse themselves to go to work.  Lois later tells Cat that Savior escaped during the riot, and Cat goes off-script while on the air to report the story.  Instead of being angry, Vinnie now respects Cat and promotes her to executive producer.
