The Trial Is Over
The Trial comes to a close, but somebody doesn't make it out alive.
Superman and Mope find that the sorcerer from the last issue teleported them onto a hostile alien ship whose humanoid creator is long dead but who left behind a mechanical race committed to the destruction of all organic life. Even though the ship was already trying to kill them, the Cyborg catches up with the fugitives and bonds with the ship, becoming even more powerful. Cyborg defeats the man of Steel and takes the two back to the Tribinal's planet where they sentence Superman to death on the spot.
Elsewhere in the Tribunal's prison, Superboy is convinced the Cyborg has been in disguise as Alpha Centurion all along now that the Centurion has been supposedly moved to another location and the Cyborg is at large.
While on Earth, Lois continues to lie to her boss and co-workers to make them think Clark is just taking personal time.
The Tribunals chain Superman to a rocket to carry out the sentence, and the Cyborg takes over their computers to make sure the rocket launches whether the Tribunal gives the order or not. In that moment, Superboy, Supergirl, the Eradicator and Steel are able to break out of their restraints and assist as the "Superman Rescue Squad", a post-Crisis re-imagining of the Superman Emergency Squad. Although Superman defeats the Cyborg, exposes the villain as a mass murderer, and saves the their world from becoming the Cyborg's new War World, the ungrateful Tribunals insist that their execution order still stands. Even the cowardly Mope stands with Team Superman, who all threaten to resist the judges' verdict.
Although he tells them he normally respects laws and customs different from his own, Superman defiantly rejects the Tribunal and their unjust legal system. Superman and his friends leave the Tribunal's world unchallenged, but they quickly discover Mope had been detained when they weren't looking. The heroes go back to rescue their friend, but now they have to face a Tribunal who has taken over the Cyborg's body. The Tribunals capture Superman again and strap him to their rocket, which they intend to blast into the deadly ball of radiation left behind after Krypton's destruction. The heroes aren't fast enough to stop the rocket, but they glimpse something faster than a speeding bullet chasing after it: we learn that Mope had taken Superman's place on the rocket during the fight. Superman fails to stop the rocket Mope is killed as the rocket explodes.
After watching the apparent death of Kal El, the Tribunals argue over how to sentence the Cyborg. Superman returns to their chamber very much alive, and the other Tribunals turn on the Prime Tribunal. For assaulting a fellow Tribinal, Tribunal Prime finds himself in violation of their own laws, and is put to death by the guards when he tries to flee. The remaining Tribunals reduce Superman's sentence to a life of atoning for his ancestor's crime, and Superman agrees to that. With few options to contain the Cyborg, the Tribunals teleport him into a seemingly inescapable black hole.
Alpha Centurion, who turns out was not the Cyborg at all, brings the heroes home. Lois Lane is absent when the Pax Romana lands in Metropolis, but Superman finds her on the roof of he Daily Planet in tears. Though her faith in Superman was unwavering, she has missed Clark so much. The Lois and Clark relationship is about to get even rockier in the coming months.
