Lois Leaves

When Lois and Clark broke up, many fans thought it was a red herring and that an unsolicited, surprise wedding was about to happen at any moment.  Back in the 90's, fandom wasn't the online presence it was today and that sort of thing could actually happen.  But when Lois Lane suddenly left Metropolis, the hopes for a speedy resolution were dashed to pieces.

Also this month, the non-Kryptonian bottle city of Kandor (first seen in the Trial of Superman) is re-introduced.

Superman #115

After Lois tells Superman that she's leaving Metropolis to take a foreign correspondent position, he flies off to the middle of nowhere to vent his frustration by smashing some rocks.  He has an encounter with a girl named Misa, the daughter of Jude (of the Hairies), who tries to control his mind and body with a device she stole from the Hairies.  She's stopped by her husband, Bron, and the Mountain of Judgment speeds onto the scene for her father to try to capture her, but she escapes.

Clark gets to the airport just in time to watch from the terminal as Lois boards the plane.  Lois wondered if he would show up at all, and she waves goodbye as tears form in both their eyes.  After the door closes, Clark silently walks out of the airport.

This issue still makes me cry all these years later.  It was so devastating that at the time I didn't buy any DC comics at all for months.

Adventures of Superman #538

Jimmy Olsen's ex-girlfriend Dana reveals that she was never really interested in Jimmy and she was just trying to get close to Superman all along.  Showing off a new costume and super powers, she uses Jimmy's wrist watch to lure the Man of Steel, who she obsessively wants to marry.  Obviously, her methods don't win over Superman and they start a fight that ends up causing a fire on a ship in the harbor.  Though she tries to redeem herself by helping Superman save people from the fire, she is missing and presumed dead in an explosion.  Nevertheless, she would be return a few more times.

At the Daily Planet, Perry White announces that he has lung cancer and appoints Clark Kent as acting managing editor in his absence.

Action Comics #725

The Bottle City part 1

An alien Tribunal Judge (from the Trial of Superman) attacks Metropolis, followed by a series of other alien opponents who fight the Man of Steel.  They're all revealed to be from the bottle city of Kandor held captive by the alien wizard Tolos, who possesses their bodies so he can get revenge on Superman.

In Northern Africa, Lois Lane struggles with the hazards of her new job in a war zone.

Back at the Daily Planet, Clark finds out Perry White hasn't even told his family about his cancer diagnosis yet.

Superman: The Man of Steel #60

The Bottle City part 2

Tolos possesses a Daxamite imprisoned in the bottle city to match the power of his Kryptonian adversary.  Superman exposes the Daxamite to lead to weaken him, and Tolos retreats.  Superman tries to find the bottle city to free it from Tolos, but he has to wait for Tolos to strike again for his next opportunity.

That night, Lori Lemaris visits Clark with some Chinese take out like old times.  Tolos returns in the recovered Daxamite body but Superman defeats him again.

Perry White discloses to his wife Alice and son Keith that he has cancer.

The bottle city of Kandor was a part of the Superman mythos that creators hadn't really been able to use in the post-Crisis era, in which only Kal El was allowed to have survived Krypton.  This version was populated by a mix of other alien races instead, some of which would become regular characters in the next few years.  This version of Kandor would remain until its destruction following Infinite Crisis, after which the rules prohibiting other Kryptonians would be dropped altogether and a new Kryptonian bottle city would finally appear.
