Twister

Tornadoes rip through Smallville!  Somebody's getting married!  And a hero leaves Metropolis for good!  After a series of short months threw off the publishing scheduling, the books are now in the order that they will stay for the remainder of the 90's era.

Superman #112

A deadly robot breaks into Stryker's Island, but it's really just a distraction for Dr. Killgrave to break out.  Superman stops Killgrave from escaping, but during all the chaos Morgan Edge successfully gets out and swims to Metropolis.

Superman takes Lois back to Mount Fuji where they previously had some alone time in Superman #59.  Clark offers to stop being Superman if that could make their relationship work out, but Lois refuses to be responsible for his retirement.  Superman gets called to rescue a NASA mission to Mars and the resourceful Lois finds her own way back to Tokyo to get home.  Superman discretely rescues the Mars spacecraft and lets the astronauts set foot on Mars on their own to become Earth's heroes in their own right.

Adventures of Superman # 535

Lex Luthor proposes to the Contessa.  Of course, rather than discussing wedding plans, they discuss their different plans for destroying the Man of Steel.  Lex wants to make Superman a forgotten memory, but the Contessa's plan is to replace Superman with Alpha Centurion by having him attend every city function and making him more popular and accessible to the public and the authorities.  When the Contessa goes to a board meeting, Lex sneaks into a secret room in his old office where he has a computer that allows him to take control of the Team Luthor armor, now Alpha Centurion's guards.  The rogue armor disrupts the welcome dinner for the Mars Mission, and although Alpha Centurion is able to stop the attack, his reputation as a superhero is irreparably damaged.

Jimmy Olsen takes Dana to the dinner, who really only wanted to go as an opportunity to meet Superman.  Awkwardly, Ron Troupe and his date Lucy Lane sit next to them.

In Smallville, Clark (in costume) tells his parents about the break-up while he helps them rebuild their farmhouse.  Suddenly, Pete Ross and Lana Lang drive up in a pick up truck to warn them about a coming tornado.

Action Comics #722

Superman flies off to stop the tornado while his friends take shelter in the storm cellar.  He tries to break it up by flying counter to its rotation, but that inadvertently splits it in two.  His further attempts to stop the storm only seem to split it into more cyclones.  This story was unashamedly intended to capitalize on the storm chaser craze around the popular movie Twister that was in theaters around this time.

In Metropolis, the disgraced Alpha Centurion leaves the city and Earth.  He would be seen in the background during the Final Night, but he would never appear in the Superman books again.

Lois sneaks into LexCorp and discovers the Contessa appears to be planning a secret wedding.

Superman: The Man of Steel #57

Superman struggles to save people from the tornadoes tearing through Smallville, but fortunately the Golden Age Flash, Jay Garrick, comes to help him.  After stopping the disaster, Jay excuses himself to go back to dinner with his wife Joan.  Superman wonders if he could ever make a marriage and a superhero career work the way Jay has.  After the storm, Clark reveals his break-up to Lana and Pete.

Lois pitches her story to Perry White, who gives her the green light to investigate the Contessa's secret wedding plans.  He ironically tells her to respect the Contessa's privacy without asking the illegal methods she used to get that information in the first place.

Lori Lemaris brings an early Phoenician sculpture that she salvaged from a ship wreck to an antiques dealer who tells her she can get millions for it.

This is a rare issue of Man of Steel with guest artists Roger Robinson and Dennis Janke.  Louise Simonson is credited as the writer on the cover, but the story was actually written by Roger Stern.
