Wanted
Jeph Loeb's Superman/Batman series continues to be the monthly highlight. Aside from Action Comics, the other stories are downright forgettable. We do start to learn more about the new Supergirl, Cir-El, although (thankfully) she won't even be around much longer.
Superman/Batman #3
After President Luthor's billion-dollar bounty on the Man of Steel, the World's Finest team finds themselves under attack by every major super villain on Earth. While they fight, Lois Lane interviews President Luthor at the White House, where he provides an artist's rendition of the Kryptonite meteor hurling towards Earth, but doesn't provide any evidence to back his charge of crimes against humanity against Superman. Even some enemies who wouldn't be motivated by greed, like Solomon Grundy and Mongul, join the chase under Gorilla Grodd's mind control. Superman and Batman think the cavalry has arrived to help them, but unfortunately Captain Atom and his team of heroes are there to bring them in for Luthor. There's not as much plot advancement in this issue, but the guest stars and dual narration make it a good read.Action Comics #808
The three "super girls", Traci 13, Steel, and Cir-El, take the wounded Superman and Lana Lang to the Fortress of Solitude, but Byakko follows them there. Natasha takes off her Steel armor for the first time and Traci 13 is shocked to see that she's black because she "sounds white."Adventures of Superman #621
Another new street-level hero calling himself the Minuteman appears in Metropolis, first seen giving the villain Copperhead a savage beating. The Minuteman has undefined speed powers and questionable vigilante methods, but he's apparently fast enough to evade Superman.Lois tries to cover an outbreak at a daycare center but S.T.A.R. Labs is there to quarantine the building and won't let her inside. Superman arrives on the scene to investigate and finds out that all the children under 5 years old have transformed into disgusting bug creatures.
Back at the Daily Planet, Clark Kent is suspicious of the new mail room guy, which it turns out is really the Minuteman's secret identity. The Minuteman tells Superman a strange story about two alien bugs who are coming to Earth to consummate their marriage, which is somehow having an affect on the all the children five and under.
Superman makes a passing comment about all the hate on the message boards, and I remember why fans didn't react so favorably to the stories of this period.
Superman #198
At the Fortress of Solitude, Superman's robot Kelex discovers the Man of Steel is infected by a Kryptonian virus. Kelex runs a scan on Cir-El to find out why she's not also infected, and they discover that while she has Kryptonian genetic traits, she is not actually Kryptonian. Kelex also tells her that she's no Linda Danvers, probably the last mention of the previous Supergirl. Meanwhile, Bizarro rampages in Metropolis, himself apparently infected by the same virus. The virus has an opposite effect on Bizarro, however, causing him to lose his anti-logic and making him more dangerous. Superman puts on a suit of armor (the same suit he saw himself wearing when he glimpsed the future) and Cir-El takes him to Metropolis to defeat Bizarro. After the fight, LexCorp CEO Talia Head takes the alien probe that brought the virus to Earth, despite Superman's protests. Superman takes Bizarro back to the Fortress and uses him to create antibodies to help fight the virus. After Superman recovers, Cir-El involuntarily transforms into her other persona (which doesn't resemble the one we saw in Action Comics this week), and she complains how much she hates Supergirl. Back in Metropolis, Superman's futuristic armor is seen flying over the night sky, with buildings in the background all lit by the Yes! logo we've been seeing everywhere.
