Who Shot Lois Lane?

Lois is shot in a war and Superman rushes to her side.  But while Lois is on that assignment, Superman is recovering from injuries at home and Lana questions why Lois isn't there for him.  And then Azzarello and Lee's Superman seems to be in a removed period of time unrelated to anything.

Adventures of Superman #632

Superman takes Lois Lane to a field hospital in Umec to treat her gunshot.  News that Lois was shot reaches the Daily Planet and Perry White tries to call her husband.  The Martian Manhunter answers the phone at the JLA Watchtower and he pretends to be Clark Kent.  The JLA discretely send the Flash and Wonder Woman to Umec to transport Lois to the Watchtower, where the JSA's Dr. Midnight (who happens to be a real medical doctor) stabilizes her condition.  As the lays silently in recovery, Superman holds her hand and promises never to leave her.  Nobody actually asks who shot Lois Lane in this book.

Back in Metropolis, Ruin escapes from police custody and goes to Metropolis General Hospital to find the the twins he had been holding hostage.  He puts his hands on their foreheads and seems to activate some power inside them.

Superman #209

Superman tells Father Leone about a fight he had in the last year with four elemental monsters made of water, fire, earch, wind and earth.  He didn't know it at the time, but the monsters were created and sent by the mysterious woman in the Middle East, who conjures the monsters on the same site where Mr. Orr had burned the Superman "S" into the ground.  Superman defeats the elemental giants one by one, until the earth elemental appears and takes over Mount Rushmore.  The elemental giants threaten to exterminate all life on Earth, but Superman warns them he will still be there when everything else is dead, and then he will reluctantly find a new new after he destroys them.  The giants back down, and the woman who created them is left crying in the sand.  Suddenly, Wonder Woman appears and strangely offers her shoulder to cry on instead.

Even though she wore her traditional costume in the last issue, Jim Lee designed another new Wonder Woman costume for this appearance, a skirt which she never wore anywhere else.

Action Comics #819

Lana Lang watches over Clark at his apartment as he still heals from his wounds.  When Clark wakes up, he questions how he got undressed.  She plays coy with him at first, saying he certainly didn't do it himself.  Lana admits hat his parents had come over and did the undressing, but the thought of his mom doesn't make feel any more comfortable.  As Superman recovers, Lana and Clark have an awkward conversations about their relationships.  Lana had been in love with Clark, but when she couldn't have him she felt she settled for Pete Ross.  Lana questions why Lois isn't here for Clark now, which seems insensitive knowing that Lois had just been shot on her assignment.  Lana says she and Pete didn't belong together and neither do Lois and Clark.  Upset, Clark puts on his Superman costume and flies away, where he's distracted by a pair of new villains who have the power to turn people into salt.  They're an oddly heterosexual couple who call themselves Sodom and Gomorrah.  This is their one and only appearance.

Superman/Batman takes a break for a couple of months before starting a new story arc.
