Superman 666

Superman celebrates its 666th issue in similar fashion to Batman #666 a few months earlier, which depicted the then brand new character Damian Wayne in a demonic future.

Action Comics makes up for months of delays by releasing three issues this month, and even though Richard Donner returns to the series, the Last Son saga still hasn't been finished.

Superman #666

In an extra-sized issue by Kurt Busiek and Walter Simonson, Superman goes to sleep and is aware that he's in a dream while he's shopping for pickles and ice cream for Lois, when contacted by Zatanna.  In uncharacteristic fashion, he nonchalantly kills his enemies, like when he spits through Lex Luthor's head.  In an altered state, he flies to Washington, D.C. and uses the chair from the Lincoln Memorial as a throne to watch the Earth from space.  Eventually, he finds his way into hell and battles the Demon, but because he can't be corrupted he's sent back to Earth.  Awake, Clark Kent returns to the apartment with pickles and ice cream, which Lois didn't ask for and doesn't need.

3-2-1 Action part 2 of 3

In "Countdown", Jimmy Olsen has adopted a secret identity calling himself Mr. Action, and uses his new super powers to beat an actual super villain, even if it is just the Exomorphic Man.  Jimmy finds where the Kryptonite Man is hiding out, trying to get funding for his research on the super villain worldwide web, the unternet.  Unfortunately, Jimmy's unpredictable powers let him down and he's tied up in a supply closet with his signal watch broken in the fight.

Meanwhile, Superman tracks down the Kryptonite Man's hideout but he's overpowered by Kryptonite radiation.  The Kryptonite Man's new Kryptonite-radiated chimpanzee companion escapes during the fight.  Jimmy tries to fix his signal watch to call Superman for help, but because the Man of Steel is unconscious in the other room he can't answer the call.  Jimmy turns up the frequency and somebody starts to break the wall.  But instead of Superman, he's rescued by Superman's dog, Krypto.

Action Comics #854

3-2-1 Action part 3 of 3

Jimmy Olsen and Krypto save Superman from the Kryptonite Man, buying Superman enough time so that he can recover and defeat the villain.  Mr. Action disappears with Krypto and Superman doesn't know who helped him, but later Jimmy reveals his identity to Superman and also reveals that because of his powers he somehow has knowledge that Clark Kent is Superman.

The Kryptonite-radiated chimpanzee grows to giant size, and Jimmy sees this as another opportunity to prove himself as a superhero.  He realizes, however, that the chimpanzee is just lonely and scared, and he calms him down without the use of any force.  The chimpanzee is clearly the Silver Age adversary, Titano, although he's never called that in this story.

Krypto hadn't been seen since for over a year since Infinite Crisis.  Jimmy tries to return the dog to Superman but Krypto seems to prefer to stay with Jimmy, so Superman asks him if he wouldn't mind keeping him for a little while.

Escape from Bizarro World part 1

Superman's imperfect clone, Bizarro, breaks into the Kent farmhouse at night and abducts Pa Kent.  After consulting his father Jor El's advice at the Fortress of Solitude, Superman takes a rocket to the nearest blue star to Earth and a cubic Bizarro World just like in the Silver Age.  This square planet is inhabited by other Bizarros, including a Lois, Clark, and Jimmy Bizarro.  Similar to how Superman communicates with Jor El, Bizarro has imprisoned Pa Kent in crystal in his own fortress, where he's plotting to destroy Bizarro World.

Superman/Batman #39

Torment part 3 of 6

Batman follows the trail of the Scarecrow while searching for the missing Man of Steel.  When he finds Scarecrow, however, the villain activates a Boom Tube.  Batman grapples Scarecrow's Mother Box with a batarang before the villain disappears in a tube.  The Dark Knight considers calling the Justice League, but decides to open the Boom Tube and go after him alone.  He finds Superman is under Desaad's mind control in Darkseid's lair, and the brainwashed Man of Steel blocks Batman from being able to escape through another Boom Tube.
