The Death of Zor El

The possibility of Superman's people co-existing on Earth is becoming less and less likely, until it crosses a point of no return, leading into the finale of the New Krypton saga next month.

Superman #682

New Krypton part 6

Clark and Martha Kent go to visit Jonathan Kent's grave in Smallville, but they're shocked to find Bizarro happily mourning there.

A team of Kryptonians is breaking into prisons in Metropolis and other places, rounding up Superman's villains for some unknown purpose.  After several police officers are killed trying to stop them, Superman rushes to Kandor to confront Zor El and Alura about it.  Supergirl is horrified to discover that her mother already knew about the plot and the dead policemen.  Alura assures them that the villains are still alive somewhere safe, and Mon El unpleasantly finds the villains are now with him in the Phantom Zone.

Jim Harper applies for a job with the Metropolis Science Police, but they initially turn him down.  After the Kryptonian attacks, however, they change their mind.

Action Comics #872

New Krypton part 7

Superman continues to demand that Alurea and Zor El reveal which Kryptonians killed the police officers in the break out, but Alura says she can't do that or that would expose herself, the one who gave the orders.  Brainiac and Luthor create a distraction in Kandor by releasing the Creature Commandos who had been imprisoned on Brainiac's ship since World War II.  Meanwhile, Metallo and Reactron take advantage of the distraction to attack Kandor.  Reactron learns that Zor El is the father of his arch-nemesis Supergirl, so he weakens him with gold Kryptonite and murders him.

At the same time, a new superpowered Nightwing and Flamebird appear in Gotham City.  At CADMUS, Agent Libery interrogates Tellus about Doomsday's whereabouts before the monster was unleashed on the Kryptonians.  And the Guardian addresses a crowd of superheroes, telling them something must be done about Kandor.

Supergirl #36

New Krypton part 8

Supergirl suffers the devastating death of her father.  The Kryptonians mourn Zor El in a funeral service, but Alura uses the opportunity to incite more violence.  Alura justifies her rhetoric by telling Superman and Supergirl that none of this would have happened if the two of them had done a better job of maintaining order on Earth before her arrival.  Kara flies away in a tearful rage of emotion, but she's greeted by a new aspiring hero calling herself Superwoman.  While Supergirl and Superwoman talk, the new Kryptonian Nightwing and Flamebird uncover a plot by some of Zod's loyalists who had blueprints to the White House.  Supergirl can't see through Superwoman's mask, but Superwoman promises she'll reveal her identity when the time is right, and then flies away.

Superman #683

New Krypton part 9

A team of heroes led by the Guardian give Superman a half hour to turn over the Kandorians who killed cops while abducting Superman's rogues gallery.  Superman pleads with Alura, but she's even less inclined to cooperate now that she thinks her husband's cooperation was the cause of his death.  Superman doesn't see any other way for the Kryptonians to continue to live on Earth in peace, but Alura hints that she has a solution of her own.  Before time runs out, Alura sends a small number of Kryptonians against the heroes.  She tells her daughter Supergirl to stand with her or she'll renounce her forever.  Torn with conflict, Supergrl turns on her cousin Superman.  The heroes find themselves overwhelmed without Superman in the fight, but then Zatanna arrives with an entourage of magic-powered allies to help turn the tide of the battle.

Superman/Batman #55

Super/Bat part 3 of 4

Lois Lane's hopes of being able to live a normal life with Clark are destroyed when Clark is taken to the hospital with a gunshot wound.  The JLA has Clark secretly "transferred" to the Watchtower where they're able to save his life.  Meanwhile, with Superman's powers Batman cleans up Gotham and expands his reach to other parts of the world.  His Justice League teammates wonder if the magic that gave him Superman's powers is also affecting his mind.  Batman almost goes too far stopping Catwoman in a burglary.  Nightwing comes to her aid, but Batman nearly kills him too, before dropping him off at Wayne Manor.  Even without his powers, Superman is determined to save his friend before he does something he'll regret forever, and Alfred presents Superman with a Batman costume that has an "S" shield instead of a bat on the chest.
