The Blaze/Satanus War

Superman teams up for the first time with the new Robin, Tim Drake, against a different kind of bat-man: a vampire.  This leads into a supernatural confrontation between Blaze and her brother, Lord Satanus.

Night of the Bat part one

Fresh off of two successful solo mini-series, Batman's new Boy Wonder, Tim Drake, comes to Metropolis in search of a fugitive vampire.  A vampire who seems to take the form of famous vampires from film, such as Bela Lugosi's Dracula and Nosferatu, comes to Lucy Lane's bedroom window and tries to abduct her, but Jimmy Olsen repels the creature of the night with a camera flash.  The developed picture shows Lucy floating in air because the vampire can't be photographed.  Jimmy decides to protect her by dressing up as a ridiculous Liefeld-esque vampire hunter, complete with knee pads, strings of garlic, pouches, and wooden stakes.  The vampire turns out to be Lucy's doctor, who's also preying on Jimmy's ex-roommate Babe.  Unfortunately, none of the usual methods for killing vampires that Jimmy or Robin try seem to work.  Superman arrives on the scene and carries the vampire doctor above the horizon into the sunlight where he's seemingly destroyed.  Superman and Robin take an injured Jimmy Olsen to the hospital, but they hear an unseen voice laughing and gloating that sunlight can't destroy a modern vampire.

Also, while checking the mail at his apartment Clark notices his neighbor Andrea's face is badly bruised.  She claims she fell down the stairs, but then her husband appears in the hall upset.

Image Comics has clearly made its debut and it's refreshing to see how its exaggerated look was already seen as a joke in the comics industry.  There's even an ad this month for an X-Force parody called Doom Force.

Night of the Bat part two

Jimmy leaves the hospital with Robin to hunt the vampire, who by now has put Lucy in a trance and taken her to a gathering of vampires at a cemetery in the woods.  Tim Drake has already been established as the tech-savvy Robin, shown here connecting a modem to a payphone to hack into a computer.  It was ahead for its time.

Meanwhile in hell, the villain Blaze is trying to find out why the scheduled dead aren't arriving as expected, and she suspects it has something to do with her brother Satanus.  Blaze goes to Metropolis and finds a desperate Sam Foswell committing suicide by jumping off a bridge.  Blaze appears to him in the form of a guardian angel and asks him to pledge himself to her.  He does, but surprisingly she lets him fall for Superman to rescue him.  His luck starts to improve at the end of the issue when out of nowhere Collin Thornton offers him a new job.

Back at the cemetery, Blaze creates a burst of hellfire with the intensity of the sun that returns all the vampire's victims to normal.  The vampire is impaled on a statue, and everybody thinks Superman saved the day when even he doesn't know what really happened.

The Blaze/Satanus War part one

News that Sam Foswell has been hired by Collin Thornton reaches the Daily Planet.  Ron Troupe is upset that he was just let go there and a new employee was hired immediately after.  Jimmy Olsen isn't at work today because he's making an appearance at a pizza parlor in his Turtle Boy costume to pay for a new car to replace the one he crashed trying to kill the vampire last issue.

At his apartment building, Clark notices his neighbor Andrea has more bruises, this time she says she was mugged.

Foswell starts his new job at NewsTime, unbeknownst that a mysterious force field has surrounded the building and murderous demons keep popping out of his reflections and killing everyone behind him.  Sensing the invasion from hell, Lord Satanus also appears out of a mirror and tells Superman that Foswell's death may be the only way to close the gate.

Lord Satanus looks just like a pre-Crisis villain named Lord Satanis, but that's where their similarities end.

The Blaze/Satanus War part two

Superman, Lois, Jimmy, Foswell, and Lord Satanus are now all trapped in the NewsTime building under attack by Blaze's demons.  Foswell runs away and Blaze appears to him again as his guardian angel, deceiving him into thinking the others are conspiring against him.  She asks him to prove his devotion to her with blood, and he transforms into a monster powerful enough to assault Superman, smashing the Man of Steel down through several floors of the building.

Meanwhile, Supergirl hears about the news in Metropolis while on vacation with Lex Luthor.  She leaves him in the middle of the flight to fly back to help, but neither she nor the Metropolis S.C.U. are able to penetrate the mystic shield around the NewsTime building.  Lord Satanus is afraid that Supergirl could actually break through the barrier, and then the physical world might be sent to Blaze's domain, so he magically transports the entire building to another realm.
