Kandor

Back from the far future of DC One Million, the Superman books take a break from their regular creative teams for a rare 4-part story by the same guest creators: Ron Marz, Tom Grindberg, Tom Palmer, and beautiful covers by Paul Rivoche (who would return for another series of four covers a few years later in a story called "Return to Krypton").

Action Comics #749

Lois and Clark leave a Saturday matinee at the movies and stroll through Metropolis' new Hypersector while discussing their future now that Clark is unemployed and Lois works for Lex Luthor.  They notice a blimp mooring there that they've never noticed before, and suddenly an alien monster starts rampaging through the city.

Superman suspects that the creature may have come from the Bottle City of Kandor so he takes the beast to Scorn who recognizes him.  The alien tells Scorn that a savior has appeared in Kandor who promises to free the entire city just as he did the himself and the blimp mooring.  Superman takes Scorn and his girlfriend Ashbury to the Fortress of Solitude and has Professor Hamilton send them inside the bottle city again like he did with the Atom.

Superman: The Man of Steel #84

We get our first glimpse of Kandor on this visit through Ashbury's visor that allows her to see for 15 minutes at a time (the rules seem to have been relaxed from just 15 minutes a day).  Now with Kandor's universal translating technology, Scorn no longer speaks in Hulk-like broken English, but in full sentences.  Scorn introduces his girlfriend to his sister and father, who hilariously asks her if she is his son's mate.

A movement called the Kandor Exodus is committing acts of terrorism around the bottle city, apparently to make the citizens want to get out.  Superman meets Kandor's new savior, who presents himself as a benevolent inventor only interested in trying to help people.  He even offers Ashbury to improve her visor to enable her to see all the time.  After they all leave, however, the savior starts to think out loud and divulges he plans to destroy Superman and Metropolis.

Superman #140

The next morning, Ashbury returns to the inventor's laboratory to take him up on his offer to help her see.  His voice reminds her of somebody, and she suddenly remembers it's the same as her old teacher, Mr. Sormon.  Unfortunately, she also remembers that Mr. Sormon turned out to the Cyborg in disguise, and the inventor reveals that he is in fact the same person.

When Scorn wakes up, Ashbury is already gone.  Scorn and Superman go to look for her at the inventor's lab; they find her visor left there but no trace of her or the inventor.  At the same time, Scorn's father addresses the people of Kandor but then he's apparently murdered by Superman in front of the crowd.  Falsely accused of murder, the real Superman submits to the city's laws to stand trial.  Even worse, Superman starts to realize that he's slowly losing his solar-based powers under Kandor's artificial sun.  He's placed in a prison cell alongside Ashbury, who explains that the Cyborg framed him in disguise.  Meanwhile, the Cyborg reveals his true form to the crowd outside and takes over the city, planning to enlarge Kandor in place of Metropolis, destroying them both.

Adventures of Superman #563

Ashbury and Superman help each other escape from their prison cells, and Superman uses his remaining powers to fight the Cyborg.  He's not able to stop the Cyborg from opening a dimensional rift to Metropolis, but this also allows Earth's sunlight to pour into the city, re-powering the Man of Steel.  Superman traps the Cyborg in the dimensional rift surrounding Kandor, saving both Metropolis and the bottle city.

Scorn's sister takes her father's place on the Council, allowing Scorn to go back to Metropolis with Ashbury, although the two won't be appearing very much after this.

The Kandor saga redeems the Cyborg Superman from his last two appearances, even though it still references both of them.  He's restored once again to a city-destroying threat who does the most damage when he's impersonating the real Superman.
