Castling

Superman/Batman is a story you can read over and over, but I honestly haven't read any of these other books since the day they came out.  Fortunately, the current creative teams only have one more month after this, and then some better stories are on the horizon.

Superman/Batman #4

Captain Atom is determined to follow his orders and have his team bring in the rogue Superman and Batman by any means necessary.  While fighting them, Superman speaks with Power Girl to see if they can trust her, while Batman teleports Katana to Japan to find a boy who may be able to save the world.  Superman and Power Girl join them in Japan, where Power Girl reveals she and some of the others are secretly working against Lex Luthor but they definitely can't trust Major Force.

Behind closed doors at the White House, Amanda Waller is concerned about President Luthor's mental health as she watches him inject himself with Kryptonite steroid.  Luthor tells Waller that he has plans for her to play a large role in the future, and then he spontaneously kisses her before he's interrupted by a call from Captain Atom.

Captain Atom's team finds the fugitive heroes in Japan and in the middle of another fight, Katana cuts off Major Force's hands with her sword, causing him to leak all his energy (in the animated version, Major Force is simply stabbed in the chest, so his wound is not so violent that he loses appendages).  Captain Atom is forced to to absorb the energy to contain the resulting explosion from destroying all of Tokyo.  He asks Superman to do him a favor and turn themselves in, before he disappears in the blast.  As the remaining heroes approach the boy genius' house on Mount Fuji, Superman is starting to feel the effects of the coming Kryptonite meteor, but notices that Power Girl is seemingly unaffected by Krptonite, unlike the last time he saw her in Superman #189.  Both Captain Atom's disappearance and Power Girl's origins would lead into Infinite Crisis a few years later.

Before they can reach their objective, however, Superman and Batman are attacked by Hawkman and Captain Marvel.  Batman tells Superman "castling", so they swap opponents (the real meaning behind this chess move of swapping the rook and king will be revealed next month).  Superman throws Captain Atom to Batman and carries Hawkman into the stratosphere to make him black out, but Hawkman uses a glove called the Claw of Horus to send Superman crashing down to Earth.  Batman finds a young boy in the snow where Superman had thrown Captain Marvel, but he asks the boy his name and the boy responds with the magic words, "Shazam."  After a flash of lightning, it appears Hawkman and Captain Marvel are going to take the defeated Superman and Batman to Luthor.

Action Comics #809

Lois and Clark take a sort-of-vacation on a cruise for journalists, but the cruise takes a dark turn when one of their fellow passengers, Jack Ryder, is found murdered and Clark Kent becomes the prime suspect.  Clark struggles with trying to clear his name while maintaining his secret identity on a boat full of reporters.  It gets worse when more people on the ship start to die and each death seems to further incriminate Clark.

Unbeknownst to Lois and Clark, Jack Ryder is also the Creeper, and his apparent murder was just a convoluted scheme involving witchcraft and demon possession to give himself a sensational story.  Clark Kent uncovers Jack Ryder's secret identity in his investigation, and while he's able to clear himself of the suspicion of murder when it's revealed that all the apparent victims are still alive, he doesn't have any evidence that he can use against Jack Ryder and has to let him go.

The Creeper is already an obscure character, so if you didn't know much about him before this issue you wouldn't have learned much from reading it.

Adventures of Superman #622

In the conclusion to one of Joe Casey's most bizarre stories, the new hero who calls himself the Minuteman has been training his whole life to stop the Anti-Angelica, two trans-dimensional alien honeymooners who have come to consummate their marriage and transform the children of Earth into their insect offspring.  The Minuteman sends both Superman and the Anti-Angelica back to their home dimension, where the Man of Steel defeats them.  But the Minuteman sacrifices himself to stay in limbo to keep them ever returning back to Earth.

Lois asks Clark if they'll ever see the Minuteman again, but thankfully we won't.  The issue ends with an ominous "Lois, we need to talk" when she asks about taking a second honeymoon.

Joe Casey's Superman run has pretty much unraveled at this point, but there's only one issue left after this one.

Superman #199

Clark goes to Smallville to ask Ma and Pa Kent for parenting advice, but leaves without telling them about the teenage Supergirl who claims to be his daughter.  Before going back home, Superman stops at the Fortress of Solitude where he left Mia, Cir-El's other persona.  In a red sun burst, she transforms back into Supergirl and they head to Metropolis together.

The future Superman in armor has been sighted at the scene of various disasters around Metropolis as people in the city seem to be going mad.  While broadcasting on the air, Lois Lane has a meltdown for no apparent reason and storms off.  Dr. Metropolis is also seen again amidst the chaos.  The future Superman explains that the new drink, Yes!, is what's driving everybody insane, and he's merely been corralling the infected people to isolate them.  The future Superman takes his past self into the dystopian future Metropolis to confront the Futuresmiths, but that will have to wait for next month's 200th issue for the finale.
